THE CENTER PRAISES NEVADA PUBLIC EMPLOYEES
BENEFITS PROGRAM DECISION TO COVER DOMESTIC PARTNERS
(Las Vegas-June 5, 2008) Today the Nevada Public Employees Benefits Program Board approved adding domestic partner benefits coverage for Nevada state employees to their benefits package by a 5-3 vote. "The Public Employee's Benefits Program Board's decision enables Nevada to recruit the best and brightest employees for the state. For too long, Nevada has not been able to offer the same benefits package options to current and prospective employees and compete with other states for the most qualified employees. This decision opens the door for Nevada to recruit and retain the most skilled and talented employees," said Candice Nichols, Executive Director. "After months of hearings, testimony and research the board heard the clear message from state employees, university and college presidents and state agencies that the citizens of Nevada deserve the best and brightest employees possible. This option affords that opportunity."
The Center encourages the state legislature to fund this approved benefits package option in the 2009 legislative session to ensure Nevada's competitiveness in the employee recruitment and retention arena.
