Southern Nevada Gay and Lesbian Community Center Praises Senate
on Passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Legislation

(Las Vegas— September 27, 2007) The Southern Nevada Gay and Lesbian Community Center praised the U.S. Senate upon passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Legislation. "This historic act by the U.S. Senate shows the country that perpetrating violent acts against individuals for real or perceived sexual orientation is not acceptable. Contrary to what some have claimed, this legislation does not restrict the free speech protections included in the constitution, it will however, increase funding for investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, in addition to providing stricter penalties for those convicted of these crimes," said Candice Nichols, Executive Director. "GLBT citizens, our family and friends call on President Bush to sign the Defense reauthorization bill with this amendment and extend these long overdue protections to our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens. No one in this country should fear that being targeted and/or attacked because of their sexual orientation, race, color, religion, gender, national or ethnic origin may or may not result in prosecution."

The Center praises Senator Reid for his support and leadership on this amendment.
